Brother Charles talks about "Keeping On Keeping On"
Greetings in the wonderful name of Jesus.
From time to time, I wonder if it isn’t time for me to retire from this job and let the younger generation do the work of evangelism in our time. They are so much more energetic than I.
I don’t want to become one of those “old codgers” who doesn’t recognize when it is time to quit. I know that people get tired of hearing stories that I repeat, and biblical themes that I never tire of lifting up.
And, yet, the fire has not gone out, and the desire to tell the story has not lessened. In fact, in the face of the blatant wickedness in our society, I feel the need to lift up the Words of my Jesus even more each day.
And I am reminded of men like E. Stanley Jones who, at the time of his death, was too old to write anymore. His hands shook too much to do it legibly. So, he took to dictating his words into a tape recorder and letting someone else do the writing for him. In fact, the very day he died he was dictating an article to be published. When the Lord called him home, he called him from the vinyard, hard at work! I’d kinda like to be doing the same thing when Jesus calls me home.
You and I are living in one of the most exciting and dangerous times in history. The values of society are changing so rapidly, it is hard to keep up with them. We have watched the “paganizing” of our world take place even while Christians are continually pointing toward the Christ who is the “Way, the Truth, and the Life.” We are no longer a “Christian Nation” that is governed by the Christian ethic. Neither our Political or Judicial systems are much guided by the holy writ.
In fact, the Christian community is drastically changing too. In an article about the new generation of Christians in our society, the March/April 2000 issue of ALERT, Ed Robb’s newsletter, had the following article:
ON BEING BORN AGAIN
"’Born-again’ doesn't mean what it used to, according to researcher Wade Clark Roof of the
University of California. Roof's newest book, Spiritual Market-place: Baby Boomers and the
Remaking of American Religion, argues that today's born-again Christians are united by
emotions and experiences not by shared doctrines or moral beliefs.”
“One-third of American's 77 million baby boomers identify themselves as born-again Christians,
but only 55 percent of those have any link to a conservative Protestant denomination.”
“Half say that religions other than Christianity are "equally good and true," and one-third of
born-again boomers believe in reincarnation and astrology. Nearly half support abortion.”
It is obvious that TV, the internet and social media have molded our society in recent years far more than the Bible. When you think about the vulgarity, the sexual immorality, the gratuitous violence, and the disrespect of those who hold Christian morals, it is frightening!
We (you and I) are greatly needed. The world must have those who will stand up for Jesus and proclaim loudly the truths of God’s Word, and say a “Nay” to the philosophies and religions of this world. If you and I don’t continue to proclaim God’s Word, the enemies of God will win the hearts and souls of everyone. We must win a few! We must reach those who will listen. We must snatch them from the very jaws of hell if need be.
So, as long as God gives me breath, I plan to use it for the work of the kingdom. I pray that you will join me in this dedication to His service!
Brother Charles
